Habit of Perseverance

Do you ever stop to think of how habits drive your behavior? Habits are routine behaviors that we repeat with nearly unconscious regularity. Psychology more clearly defines them as a fixed way of thinking, feeling or willing acquired though repetition. Every day habits drive our success or keep us from it. Does challenge and adversity keep you from persisting toward your goals? If so, there is a reason.

Habits are Neural Pathways

Habits are hard to build and break because they are literally wired into our brain. Resistance to change can sometimes feel like a comfortable space to stay safe but our real growth happens in challenges. When we challenge our selves to build new positive habits, personal growth ensues. This is true in public speaking and leadership as it is in nearly every area of life. Will you persist at the first sign of adversity or setback or will you champion forward?

Forming Habits

Habits can drive our success as much as our lack there of. Holding to tired old habits that keep us from our truly limitless potential and are highly limiting – but only if we continue investing in them. We can choose new habits, foster them, until they become our new norm. One EU Journal of Social Psychology study found the average time to form a new habit was 66 days. This study (among others) highlights the need to persistently work toward creating and fostering our desired new habits. Persistence is the key to habit formation and success in general.

Create a New Habit of Perseverance

A key aspect of success in any field is working toward goals, learning from failures and never giving up. If a goal is of paramount importance to us we have to learn to pursue it with vigor. So no matter the trials or obstacles – stick to your goals. Persevere. Don’t give up. Persistence is one key aspect that will keep on the path toward the success you so deserve.

Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan knows volumes about persistence. Having won 6 NBA titles and 2 Olympic gold metals; he knows quite a bit about not giving up. The following Michael Jordan quote sums up the power of perseverance beautifully:

β€œI’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Never give up on your goals & dreams. Hold to the habit of perseverance and live them.

  1. I have got some both good and bad habits. I need to work on improving and eradicating my bad habits as they are getting in the way of my motivation and desire to succeed. We shouldn’t be defined by our habits, we should take control of ourselves πŸ™‚

  2. I read it somewhere that each day in the morning we should try to develop one new good habit and try to leave one bad habit that you think you have. Good habit help us to achieve our goal efficiently and leaving bad habits will reduce your distraction and help you to focus more on your goal. So habit of perseverance is necessary in any field.

  4. Thank you, Joseph, for the article on how to form a habit of perseverance. There are times when I feel defeated but I have learned not to let these destructive feelings take hold of me. Thankfully, I bounce back quickly.

    In addition, self talk also helps. If you keep telling yourself that you are persistent and resilient you come to believe it.
