Is Public Speaking a New Year’s Resolution

With the dawn of every new year and advent of the preceding – often come valuable personal resolutions. We personally vow to do countless things for the betterment of ourselves, others and society as a whole. These actions signal the core human existential struggles we all face. We all seek to fulfill some purpose, achieve some meaning with and achieve certain goals in our lives. Truth be told, confronting our deeper personal challenges often yields the most powerful personal growth. For many novice public speakers a key goal is confronting their fear, anxiety or learned helplessness relating to public speaking. So many of my beginning students report my courses to be a long ignored key item on their new year’s resolution list. I’m so happy and honored to help them finally wrest free from the falsehood that speaking success isn’t possible. So what of you? Is public speaking one of your new year’s resolutions? If so, what are you planning on doing about it?

No matter the ambition, I wish you success in all of your goals for this year. May it be your best year yet!

  1. Being able to speak publicly with confidence has been my goal for some years now, but only currently have I decided to actually to something about it. I love reading your speaking related posts as they are very helpful and above all inspiring to my own success.

  2. I know that being able to speak publicly with confidence is not impossible, but it seems that it is something that certainly does not come naturally to me. It is essential in my line of work that I am able to communicate with large audiences, and therefore I am going to continue to strive to become the best public speaker imaginable this year!

    1. Olivia,
Like most things of value, speaking takes time and effort to improve. I have full faith in your capacities and know you will improve with time. Keep focus on the fundamentals, practice and reframe your understanding of the craft. At some point – you will find yourself where you want to be. Speaking success will be yours!
